Christchurch Learn to Paint Display

  • BreakFree on Cashel

This class will take place on August 12 and 13, 2017 from 9am to 7pm both days.

I recommend all of the students bring the following with them:
Paints
Brushes
Palettes
Light
Journal and Pen
Hair Dryer
Paper Towels
Water Cup

Please note that this will be a long and intense class. I recommend everyone bring a sack lunch with them and any snacks they need in order to be comfortable during the class. We will have short breaks but otherwise I want to focus on powering through as much information as possible over the weekend.

I will supply a copy of FeR Miniature's Random Encounter 54mm Dwarf (Resin). for every student already cleaned. The aim will be to get the miniature as fully painted as possible over the course of the weekend.

The content of the course will cover the very basics of priming and the proper way of basecoating a model to begin with. Then we will cover techniques for blending including glazing/layering and Two-Brush Blending. I will explain how to tackle different surfaces on models including how to paint metallics, hair, skin tone color theory and using stippling and hashing to create visual texture on your model.

The aim of the class is to get a tabletop painter comfortable with the basics of display painting. You don't need to have any advanced knowledge of painting to enter this class. Some knowledge would be helpful but if you are a complete novice painter, don't worry! We will start at the beginning. I will also bring the different tools I use to clean models and we will cover their uses. I will also discuss the different primers on the market and explain their different properties.

I recommend everyone bring the following with them:

Food and Drink (we will have some short breaks for eating and stretching)
Paint
Brushes
Palette
Journal/Sketchbook
Pen/Pencil
Rinse Water Cup

and whatever else you may need to be comfortable.

I will supply everyone attending class with a copy of Romero the Cat (painted by Meg in the photo) from FeR Miniatures. Each bust will be mounted to a plinth and primed for class. Part of the cost of the tuition goes to cover the cost of this premium bust.

In the class we will go over lighting and atmoshpere on models, some blending techniques in case anyone needs help, color theory and how to push contrast.

This is a class that is aimed at bettering the current level of the students. I will not be teaching you my way of painting, as everyone has their own style. Instead, I will be teaching theory you can apply to your own style and help to push everyone out of their comfort zone. I will be available for demos if needed and questions throughout class.

I utilize a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the different concepts in class. There will be breaks in between lecture topics to allow the students some time to do some color mixing exercises in order to better understand the concepts being discussed. Once the presentation is complete, students will have a chance to think about how they want to paint their model, prime them outside and come back and start working. I encourage students to discuss ideas among one another and ask as many questions of me as needed.

I would like everyone to have a finished bust by the end of class that you can take home as an example to show you what you are capable of.

The class will run for 20 hours.

P3 paints (if you have them, they are best for 2 Brush Blending. Vallejo will also work for 2BB but will be more difficult. Reaper, GW and Scale 75 paint will not work with 2 brush blending.

Brushes
There are a few options. I use a Raphael 8404 Sable size 3 for blending and a Winsor and Newton Series 7 (standard not miniature sizes) size 2 for application and details.

You can also use a size 2 and 3 from Rosemary & Co Artists Brushes series 22 (not 33).

• You can get any good quality Red Sable Brushes as well in a size 2 and 3.

• I do not recommend Games and Gears brushes for 2 Brush Blending as they are too soft and floppy.

Files
Super glue
Hobby knife
White and Black Spray Primer for Zenithal Priming

Other minis to practice techniques on that include a well sculpted and defined face, fur/hair, weapons or shields, something that can be turned into a glowy bit, lots of skin and wide open spaces such as shields or capes to practice blending. Supply List (recommended)

Painting lamp-preferably one with a fluorescent or daylight bulb. Bulbs that are too yellow or too blue distort the color of the paint.

Dry well palette
Sketchbook and pen for note taking
Hair dryer (at least a couple for the class to share)
Files
Super glue
Hobby knife

Melbourne Basing Class

Internationally recognized professional miniature painter, Meg used to work in the Privateer Press P3 Studio in Bellevue, Washington, USA as a Staff Painter. She has also worked for companies such as Reaper Miniatures, Dark Sword Miniatures, Freebooter Miniatures, Crunch-Waffle Enterprises, Demented Games on their Twisted range and is currently partnered with Steam Forged to design a paint range and new larger scale miniatures range.

She paints for collectors such as George R.R. Martin of Game of Thrones fame and Dave Gross of Pathfinder Tales. She has been painting since 2004 and has won over 20 international awards. Since 2013 she has been traveling around the world to teach painting classes and is now offering a Basing Master Class!

Gundam Universe has opened up their doors to host the very first ever Arcane Paintworks Basing Class! It will run over the course of a weekend just like the painting class.

This class is aimed at introducing people to different basing materials, how to use them, and discussing composition. I will provide kits to everyone with materials needed to make a Ruined Temple Base. This way we can learn to create man-made and organic materials for the base.

Some of the things included in the base will be bricks, dirt/sand, a tube of super glue, wooden block, plasticard, some plastic sprued scenery bits (still to be determined), some sculpting putty.

Students will need to bring some tools with them:

Scalpel or Hobby knife with replacement blades
paper towels
additional super glue
additional sculpting putty
sand paper in various grits (coarse to super fine)
paint brushes
water jars

Gundam Universe has asked me for a list of items to stock in the shop for the weekend. I would recommend bringing some extra cash to stock up on things that you may have trouble finding in the future. Especially, tons of plasticard! I plan on stocking up on some myself. :)

I would recommend finding a 28-35mm mini ahead of time that you'd like to include on the base in the future. Bring it prepped and with feet pinned so we can play around with composition and planning.

My aim is to go through construction and if we have time we can start painting. The way I paint my bases is a bit different to how I tackle my minis.

I will be making an example base ahead of time. Once I have constructed it, I will post photos. You don't have to copy it in the class. We will discuss why I made it the way I did and how to frame a mini. You guys can use my example base as a visual guide.

The class is $250AUD per person. This covers the cost of tuition and the cost of the kit I will be providing to everyone. We are limited to 15 seats in the class.

Bank transfer is the preferred method of payment. Registration is a first come, first serve basis. As soon as a deposit or full tuition is paid I will record names on a roster.

If you need to you can pay the deposit ahead of time and then pay the rest in cash on the day. Please PM me for Bank Transfer details.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will try to get an example base made up soon and posted on here so you guys have an idea of what we will be going over.
